Frank J. Carmel
Frank J. Carmel (1954-2021) was the managing shareholder of Carmel & Carmel, P.C. Mr. Carmel was a graduate of the University of Virginia – School of Law (1979) with an undergraduate degree in Economics with Distinction from Virginia Tech (1976). Mr. Carmel works with several law firms in the Washington, DC area before starting his own firm, Carmel & Carmel, P.C. Over the course of 30+ years, Mr. Carmel built Carmel & Carmel into a firm known internationally for its expertise in representation of real estate developers, investors, marketing companies and lenders in complex regulatory issues involving federal and state laws.
Mr. Carmel was a gifted real estate lawyer who was well regarded amongst his peers. He was known as the leading expert in advising both domestic and foreign developers, lenders and investors in the legal issues involved in the marketing and sale of real estate in the U.S. A trailblazer in his field, Mr. Carmel led Carmel & Carmel to be one of the first law firms in the country to register a condominium hotel with the SEC as far back as 1984. Mr. Carmel was an avid advocate for his clients and was significantly involved in assisting in litigation involving HUD (now CFPB) and state land sales registrations and exemptions on behalf of developers. Mr. Carmel served on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Retirement Communities and was a long-term Board Member of the former National Land Council. He was an active member of Urban Land Institute and on the Recreational Development Council, the American Resort Development Association, the Association of Real Estate Licensing Law Officials and a number of other industry trade groups.
Mr. Carmel passed away unexpectedly on March 20, 2021. He was well known for his warmth, kind spirit and keen sense of humor. He leaves behind his legacy, which we, at Carmel & Reyes, strive to honor and carry on every day.
